Frances Attaway
Announcing the death of artist Frances Scott Attaway, age 93.
Widow of writer William Attaway.
She passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of March 13, 2022.
Fran was an internationally known fine artist, graphic, interior and landscape designer. She worked most notably as the inhouse artist with Verve Records in NYC and as the interior and landscape designer for a number of renowned houses in Barbados, including Fustic House and The Great House, as well as the original landscape plans for George Washington House and Museum. A world traveler in her work with her second husband, clarinetist Tony Scott, Fran never lost her enthusiasm for life, she was a prolific painter and always had a notebook recording life in detailed black pen drawings. Deeply loved by many, Fran gave the best advice, was intuitive and a generous spirit.
She leaves behind to celebrate her remarkable life: her sons William Attaway and James Angel, daughters Noelle Kirton and Jennifer Angel, son in-law David Kirton, grandchildren; Tacoma and Jasper Goggins, Sean St. John, Karl Doerrer, William (Billy) Attaway, Marley Kirton, Coko Kirton and Sankofa, Betta, Wasser, Vincent and Erte Attaway. Sally Eisenman and family, Susan Restino, David and Sarah Godine and family.
Close friends and family overseas include Harry and Julie Belafonte and family, the late Sidney Poitier, Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker. Quincy Jones, Creed Taylor, Dot Spiking, Monika Shaka, Hanscom family, Tamie Smith and Venice Beach friends.
In Barbados, where she and her husband William Attaway lived for many years: Sir Fred and Lois Smith, the Talma, Goddard, Bannister, Pilgrim, St. John and Speiler families. Sue Yellin, Penelope Hynam, Cheryl Hutchinson, Loretta and the Vista Villa crew.
Fran will be cremated in a closed ceremony and close friends and family will attend a private celebration of her life.
