A beautiful service. I didn't know Charles that well, but he was very special to his cousin, my mother Lynn, and we always used to see him when he came over to the UK. My main memories were a cheeky smile and an absolute devotion to Angela. It was a great pleasure to see him in February and lovely to hear the tributes today. I am sure he will be sadly missed, but what a great life.
Uncle Charles has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. To write about him, I must also write about my beloved Auntie Angela, who has been a guiding light throughout my life. She has taught me so much about family, home and how to live. Always by her side was Uncle Charles, the love of her life.
Auntie Angela often described him as the most wonderful companion and provider. Over the years, I saw that for myself. They were married for 60 years and watching them together throughout my life showed me what a loving marriage can be. Uncle Charles made her laugh, cared deeply for her and was her steadfast companion.. Together, they created a home full of warmth and love.
Born in Devon, Uncle Charles came to Barbados to teach Spanish in the 1960โs. My grandfather Gordon Bell, who also taught Spanish, introduced him to Auntie Angela. Uncle Charles taught at the University of the West Indiesโ Campus in Barbados in its earliest years and he was also a colleague of my dad Richard Allsopp. His life became woven into our familyโs in so many ways.
Iโm also grateful to Uncle Charles for the love and guidance he showed to my own children, Naomi and Joshua, in whom he took a keen interest. . I learned a great deal from him too, especially by watching the way he lived and the love he gave to Auntie Angela and I will always be grateful for him and for the place he held in our family.
I hold my beloved Auntie Angela, my cousins Anthony, Roger and Theo close in my heart and in my prayers. I love you all and share your sorrow as we remember Uncle Charles. May he rest in eternal peace.
