We were lucky enough to meet Dame Maizie and Sonia at Huntes Gardens
a couple of years ago. As regular visitors to Barbados, we were delighted to be able to spend some time with her and we had a splendid talk on the balcony looking out over the gardens. Dame Maisie Invited us to tea at her home on our next visit to Barbados, but sadly this was an arrangement that we could not make happen and we did not meet again. Our condolences to the whole family

Extending deepest sympathy to Sonja, Yolande, Professor Pedro, and Peter on the passing of your beloved Mum, Dame Maizie. I shared many years of friendship with Dame Maizie, and her selfless contribution to the development of Barbados in several areas of endeavour is deserving of the highest praise. She was a good friend of my late mother, Edna Nicholls, and I remember the interesting conversations they shared back in the day. May God comfort you all at this time, and May she Rest in Peace.

To the family and friends on behalf of the Bascombe, Barrow and Howard families and from the St Michael south central branch of the Democratic Labour Party we extend our deepest condolences to you the family on the passing of an amazing loving caring devoted tower of a humble lady Dam Mazie knew me from when I was a little child and grew me and taught me many things about life about democracy and what it truly meant to stand firm for what you believe in and care for others no matter what or whom comes against you. She was kind straightforward and was not afraid to let you know when you were wrong she cared and defended the rights of women all over the Caribbean and beyond and also cared for many men as well she knew when to be serious and funny at the same time she just like many other great female stone works of the DLP cared about her party and the progression of ,she also had very strong family values and cared for many young people. Dame Mazie till we see each other in heaven Continue to sleep in peace and rise in glory. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Mazie Barker-Welch was a dear friend of my family for many years and later became my Colleague.
While we served in the Bureau of Women's Affairs, She as Parliament Secretary and Me, Marva B. Alleyne as The First Director of Women's Affairs-where her office was located. During this period, we worked together on legislation to protect women from violence and abuse at the National and Caricom Regional levels. She served in the post of Chairman of the Caribbean Commission of Women of the OAS, The first person to serve in this post for two consecutive terms. This legislation was later also approved by the UN Commission of Women.
Our friendship will be dearly missed as we have known each other for over 50 years and became like sisters.
Condolences are also sent from Rev. Sherwin Alleyne (My Brother-Florida) and my Daughter Shelley and the rest of the Alleyne family. May she rest in peace and rise in Glory with her Lord and Savior whom she loved.

Our condolences to the family – Sonja, Pedro Welch who I knew very well and others.

I met Maisie when the Business and Professional Women’s Club was being formed; active members were Milroy Reece, Ms. Ward, Ms. Dottin who played a lead role in the same.

Maizie was articulate in her thoughts, cool and was all for the service of all Barbadians. I don’t think in all the years I have known her she has ever been rough, bad tempered or egotistic in her achievements. She was a down to earth person and always full of love; we were close. She had a full life and has contributed in no uncertain way to Barbados; even at 96 she was active.

Respect is earned and love comes automatic. She was a hero for the women of Barbados and the Government of Barbados must declare her as one of the patriots who will always be cherished. Life is in God’s hand, he giveth and takes; God rest her in his arms.

We thank the Government to give her a state funeral but for the contribution she has done to the DLP; it is sad that her body was not brought to headquarters and respect paid to her from all the persons she has helped in her life – old traditions have gone by the eddoes – sad.
