Herbert 'Herbie' Yearwood, you were an exceptional human being. In your own way, you always put people and Barbados, before politics and self, during your time as DHC to the UK. You have left a powerful legacy and a very high bar for others to aim at in delivering service to others. You have delivered faithfully my friend, now it's your time to rest peacefully in that beautiful paradise in the great beyond.

Sincere condolences to the family and friends.

Herbert Yearwood was Barbados’ Deputy High Commissioner, in the UK, from 1995 to 2005.

In 1995, The Barbados (UK) community felt immediately that Herbie was the right person for the job at the right time. We knew that Herbie’s personal qualities of reliability, fair- play, openness and perseverance, particularly in difficult situations were desperately needed in our UK community.

Our Barbados (UK) community had been functioning for more than 30 years in every area of the British Establishment. We had years of personal experience and understanding of the NHS; Education; Local and Central Government; Charities and large multinationals. Also, our many Barbados (UK) Voluntary Associations had been functioning for more than 25 years, and in most cases, needed fresh motivation and direction: it was an exciting, hopeful time!

Herbie and High Commissioner, Peter Simmons set up advisory groups to the Barbados High Commission to achieve their objectives, mainly in Education, Health and Welfare, Trade and Commerce and The Arts. All Caribbean, UK High Commissions supported these projects.

Barbados in particular benefited from the advisory groups’ activities, namely:

a) Trade and Commerce. Barbados Expo 2000 at London’s Excel Centre. Exhibitors from Barbados attended this 3 day event, the first of its kind in the UK.

b) Health and Welfare. This group with joint UK funding was set up to support free mammograms and cervical cancer prevention clinics in Barbados.

c) Friends of Barbados Art Initiative. Mrs Kathy Yearwood promoted and Invited artists such as Virgil, Broodhagn, David Innis, and Itan to showcase their Art in notable galleries in London.

In all of this, Herbie Yearwood received the usual negative comments and distractions from a few professional critics and objectors. Herbie, however, soon dismissed these persons in his usual, well known, effective, ‘unprintable style!’

Thankfully, on the 9th of December 2023, the Herbie Yearwood Project Team (UK), in London hosted a successful ‘thank you’ party for Herbie’s family, friends and past project participants. It was a lovely reunion and Herbie was in good form.

Herbie is now at peace. He was getting tired – a cure was not to be.

God placed his arm around him and whispered “come with me.”

"Greater love has no one than this; to lay down one's life for one's family, friends and party. This verse encapsulates the ultimate expression of love and friendship. Selflessness in friendship is a trait that is beyond measure. Gratitude for Herbie who broke all the rules of engagement and by going above and beyond all boundaries, reflects his understanding of sacrificial love. It encourages us to love and value our friends and comrades more profoundly He was a BLP soldier who fought for his Party and Christ Church West Constituency Branch and carried his weapons with integrity.

Rest In Peace my friend and comrade.

I humbly and gratefully offer this tribute to Mr Herbert Yearwood, on behalf of West Indian Friends and Families Association, and as a former vice president and a secretary of the association.
The West Indian Families and Friends Association (WIFFA) has been in existence since 1985.
On Mr Yearwood’s appointment as deputy, High Commissioner in 1995, he hit the ground running by connecting not only with WIFFA but with other voluntary organisations
Herbie as we all lovingly and familiarly called him, was dedicated and committed to the diaspora.
He approached his duties with sincerity and dedication and never did he compromise his beliefs nor lose the focus of his purpose
His energy and work ethic were legendary and exemplary and were the envy of those of us who were less endowed
He never failed to respond to an invitation whether it be a a church service, a fundraising event or a funeral, neither did he ever fail to assist in whatever capacity he was needed. Mr Yearwood was always a great champion of the diaspora and WIFFA was one of the many organisations which benefited from his extensive knowledge and expertise.
His assistance and advice were always tendered with words of dry humour, delivered in a way that only he could, often leaving those who were not as familiar with him amazed
Herbie was as funny as he was loyal
He was also well known for his organisational skills, and his ability to bring teams together to achieve a common gold
These attributes were sorely missed when his appointment to the High Commission ended
Nevertheless his legacy lives on in the hearts , minds and actions of all of us who were fortunate to have met him.
May he rest in eternal peace.
