A great loss for our nation. By far one of the best Prime Ministers to have graced our shores. He could comfortably stand shoulder to shoulder with the Rt. Hon. Errol Barrow in the Hall of the Greats. Such was his stature. May he Rest in Peace. Condolences to his children and siblings.

My wife and I join Barbadians in expressing sadness at the death of former Prime Minister the Right Honorable Owen Arthur. As a beneficiary of the late Prime Minister’s politics of inclusion, I had the honor to serve Barbados when he appointed me as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations at New York. I was therefore able to see at close hand his very good understanding of the varied development of small island states like Barbados, and how he formulated economic and financial policies to help Barbados better cope with these challenges. He was a fierce proponent of Caribbean regional cooperation, and led the region in its attempt to improve economic and financial collaboration. We shall miss him. On behalf of myself and my family I extend deepest sympathy to his family, as well as to the Government and people of Barbados on his passing.

I was extremely saddened when I heard of Owen's death.
We were friends for some 41 years beginning in 1979 when he joined the staff of the Jamaica Bauxite Institute, which I headed at the time, as Director of Economics. As he was to show later in life as Prime Minister of Barbadoos his performance was sterling. He was to my mind an example of a person of thought and action.
We kept in touch over the years and, among other things, he was the gracious host, variously, of myself, my wife, my brother, Omar (who recommended him to me in the first place), and my friend Peter Phillips at Test Matches in Barbados. But we kept in touch on many other things as well such as governance matters including the structure and functions of the Cabinet Office along the lines of developed Commonwealth countries.. Not least of all,we both shared an admiration for the Manleys, Norman and Michael. Althiough he was as Barbadian as they come he had a profound love for Jamaic and showed this in many ways..May the members of his family take some comfort in the profound usefulness of his life. May his soul rest in peace.
